With a 209-point advantage over Red Bull, Mercedes is in a good position to wrap up the Constructors’ Championship this weekend at Imola.
With only 4 races left after this weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Mercedes only needs a 176 points advantage to win the championship.
This means Red Bull can keep its title hopes alive only if they out-core Mercedes by 33 points at Imola. Considering Red Bull only outscored Mercedes once this season, but only by one point, this is really not likely to happen.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was asked what will the team focus on, once the title is clinched.
“When I was walking up to do the media rounds with you guys, my thought was what do we need to do to maintain these levels of performance,” Wolff told Motorsport.com.
“And everything we do from now on will be important for next year, and also setting the pace for the 2022 regulations.
“So it’s an extremely challenging situation that I take contentment in, trying to help structure our capability in a way that we can stay where we are, whilst obviously staying humble and not allowing one millimetre of sense of entitlement.
“Overall, I enjoy the task that is in front of us.”
