Mercedes reveals George Russell’s car had a water leak issue, but the team “all agreed we’re going to let him drive to the end even without water”.

George Russell scored his first win of the 2022 season at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, however, Mercedes reveals he was very close to a DNF.

“We had a water leak on the car throughout the race, and it wasn’t clear that we could actually make it to the end,” team principal Toto Wolff said after the race.

A Mercedes spokesperson later revealed the extent of the issue.

“We were concerned at one point that we would be four-five laps from the finish and not make it. But then it did but by the skin of its teeth,” the team’s spokesperson said.

Wolff also revealed that the team agreed they would not inform George of the issue.

“We talked about it on the intercom and we all agreed we were going to let him drive to the end even without water, just on whatever was there and try to finish the race,” the Austrian concluded.
