Mercedes’ Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin says the team expects the W13 to be in “a better working window” at Monza than it was at Spa.

Mercedes’ car has been having many ups and downs in terms of performance, depending on the track characteristics.

At Hungaroring the car was able to put up a fight with the frontrunners, but at the next race in Belgium, it was again firmly in the midfield.

Thankfully the performance got better at Zandvoort, and Mercedes believes Monza is also going to be better than Spa.

“Fundamentally the aerodynamics of the car will be very similar, we can run smaller wings but if we run smaller wings we’ve got a bit less downforce,” Andrew Shovlin said in Mercedes’ Dutch Grand Prix debrief video.

“We’re optimistic that some of the specific problems we had in Spa over the bumps shouldn’t affect us.”

However, the Briton warns that the team is not sure if they will be able to challenge Red Bull.

“We think we can get a better working window, however the Red Bull does look very efficient.

“It’s fast on the straights and it’s quick in the corners and those problems seem bigger for us when we go to the low downforce tracks. So it’s difficult to say exactly where we will be.

“Probably not as strong as we were in Zandvoort, but hopefully nowhere near as difficult as it was in Spa,” Shovlin concluded.
