A Mercedes spokesperson reportedly confirmed the team will use DAS at the Australian Grand Prix despite threat of protest from Red Bull.

It was reported earlier today that Red Bull’s advisor Dr Helmut Marko claimed his team is ready to lodge an official protest if Mercedes uses its innovative Dual Axis Steering system at the Australian Grand Prix.

It was confirmed during pre-season testing that the system will not be legal in 2021, but the question over its legality in 2020 remains. Mercedes already said the FIA has been aware of the systems’ development since 2019 and now Auto Motor und Sport reports the team has full intention on using it this weekend.

“The season has only just started, and however small the advantage is, it’s unreasonable to give up every advantage we could have over Red Bull and Ferrari,” said a Mercedes spokesperson.

“That’s why we will carry on using the DAS-system in our car at the risk of the protest.”
