Mercedes’ Motorsport Strategy Director James Vowles says more aero testing time “would be a small consolation prize compared to the gain of being second in this year’s championship”.
At the United States Grand Prix, Red Bull picked up the 2022 Constructors’ title, but the battle for second place is still wide open.
Mercedes is currently third in the Constructors’ Championship standings, 53 points behind Ferrari.
F1’s aerodynamic testing restrictions give more aero testing time to teams who finish lower in the standings, but Mercedes says their goal is still getting P2.
“Our goal is clear,“ said James Vowles.
“We are here to fight Ferrari and take second place by the end of the championship.

“It’s a tall order with where we are on points now, there’s over a 50-point deficit that we have to overcome in the next three races.
“Nut we’re here to pick up everything we can towards the end of the year and learn, more importantly, about where we need to be next year.
“Ultimately, we don’t want to be finishing second or third, but certainly, third for us would be nothing.
“The ATR [aerodynamic testing restrictions] would be a small consolation prize compared to the gain of being second in this year’s championship,” the Briton concluded.
