FIA race director Michael Masi says numerous incidents between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in Saudi Arabia are “part of an intense championship battle on both sides”.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen clashed on several occasions at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and each of these clashes could have ended in an extremely dangerous situation.

One of them ended in a collision at Turn 27, that thankfully only led to some damage to Lewis’ front wing. Verstappen was later penalised for this.

When asked about what occurred in the race, FIA race director Michael Masi said:

“It is an intense championship battle between two fantastic drivers and two great teams. That is part of an intense championship battle on both sides.

“The incident at Turn 27, having discussed it with the stewards, which is why they waited to investigate that until after the race, just to get the full perspective of both drivers involved, to understand the entire situation.”

Asked if this will be discussed in future drivers’ briefings, he said:

“I think the drivers’ briefings, there is always discussion on various things.

“If it is or not, that is part of why we have a drivers’ meeting, to have an open and frank discussion between us and exchange views,” concluded Masi.
