2016 Formula 1 champion Nico Rosberg says the fact that Lewis Hamilton became the “best of all time”, further “confirms” his own success.
Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton had a fierce championship rivalry from 2014, unit the German retired in 2016. The Mercedes duo fought it out on and off the track, with Lewis coming out on top in 2014 and 2015, and Rosberg finally becoming champion in 2016.
The German says he feels Lewis’ unprecedented success makes the fact that he managed to beat him in 2016 more significant.
“I knew how good he was,” Rosberg explained to Augsburger Allgemeine.
“For the outside world it is now a confirmation that he is the best of all time, even by titles. That I beat him in the same car gives me extra confirmation of my success.”

Rosberg was then asked who he believes could challenge Hamilton in 2021.
“He has incredible talent and the best car. The only one who can get a little closer is Max Verstappen. Maybe his new team-mate Sergio Perez too, if the Red Bull car is going well.
“Otherwise his Mercedes colleague Valtteri Bottas, but with him, the chances dwindle with every year he doesn’t make it,” concluded Rosberg.
