Niki Lauda’s son Mathias told La Gazzetta dello Sport that his father’s stake in Mercedes would “return to the team” in 2020.
Following the three-time world champion and former Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda’s passing in 2019, there was some speculation about what would happen with his (believed to be) 10% stake in the German team. Last summer, when asked if a decision has been made on what would happen with the shares, Mercedes team boss and fellow shareholder Toto Wolff said:
“No. We will make a decision about that after the summer break.”
However now Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport quoted Lauda’s so Mathias as saying:
“This was already foreseen in a contract that was made a few years ago.
“It was decided that the shares would return to Mercedes within 2020. They don’t pass on to families, they simply return to Stuttgart.”
Lauda added that “Motorsport and Formula 1 were really everything to [his father].”
