There have been a lot of rumours swirling around that Mercedes’ Nyck de Vries could replace Nicholas Latifi at Williams. The Dutchman gives his comments.
Reigning Formula E champion and Mercedes’ F1 reserve driver Nyck de Vries made his Formula 1 free practice debut at the Spanish Grand Prix FP1, with Williams.
After his performance, Williams’ Head of Vehicle Performance Dave Robson said the young Dutchman deserves to be in Formula 1.
“He clearly has what he needs to be to be an absolute top-quality competition driver,” Robson said.
“He’s worthy of a place on the grid, I think, but so many people are. His pace was there. His ability to understand the tyre and do the out-lap correctly, was really impressive.
“He had some very useful comments on the balance of the car, which agrees quite well with what we’ve heard from the two race drivers.”

Since then rumours have been swirling around that Nyck could even replace Nicholas Latifi at Williams even before the 2022 season in over.
Asked about his future, de Vries said:
“I’m highly motivated and committed to achieving what we [are trying] to do. I really care about our sport and I have a lot of passion for what we do.
“So regardless of my future, I obviously want to win and defend the championships. There are obviously a lot of rumours and people like to talk about it, but I’m living in the present.
“And we are in Jakarta now, and we still have eight races to go to make sure it comes our way,” de Vries concluded.
