2020/2021 Formula E champion Nyck de Vries says “the rules have not been followed in the way they are described in the regulations”.
Mercedes’ Formula E driver Nyck de Vries was asked to give his opinion on the controversial ending of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where his countryman Max Verstappen basically got handed the 2021 title after race director Michael Masi didn’t follow the Safety Car rules and protocols.
De Vries told Dutch broadcaster NOS that he believes Lewis Hamilton had his title unjustly taken aways.
“I think Lewis has been deprived of [the championship] a little bit because the rules have not been followed in the way they are described in the regulations,” de Vries said.

“In sport, you assume that things are done fairly and honestly. With me there was mainly a lot of surprises because I could not understand what happened,” concluded the Dutch driver.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff told the same broadcaster that Verstappen doesn’t deserve his title to be overshadowed by the controversy.
“It’s annoying for Max that these discussions cast a shadow over his title. He hasn’t deserved that,” the Austrian said.
“I can partly understand the opinion of some Dutch fans that we are bad losers. Passion is part of the sport and that includes these texts and allegations on social media,” concluded Wolff.
