Former Mercedes Executive Director Technical Paddy Lowe says Lewis Hamilton’s 2016 loss to Nico Rosberg made him “unbeatable”.

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg’s championship rivalry from 2014 until 2016 is now legendary. Although Hamilton won out in 2014 and 2015, in 2016 Rosberg finally managed to come out on top. After winning the championship, the German surprisingly retired from Formula 1.

Paddy Lowe, Mercedes’ Executive Director Technical at the time, says it was losing out to Rosberg that made Hamilton into the powerhouse we know today.

”That was an important moment in Lewis’ career,” Lowe told At the Controls podcast.

“None of us are perfect. Lewis is a great driver, but he also has weaknesses.

“Nico is a fantastic driver and he absolutely deserves this championship. He was the best opponent Lewis has ever faced.

“But what Lewis learned from [losing out to Rosberg] is that he had to be absolutely constant and couldn’t leave anything to chance.

“He relied too much on his talent. Since he lost to Nico he has hardly done anything wrong in races.

“That makes him unbeatable now,” concluded Lowe.
