Award-winning F1 journalist Peter Windsor says “Formula 1 missed a massive opportunity to create one of the most emotionally charged moments in the history of its sport” at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

At the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, F1 race director Michael Masi broke the rules which govern the use of the Safety Car, and basically gifted the world championship to Max Verstappen.

Had Masi followed the rules, the race would have ended under the Safety Car and Lewis Hamilton would have won his record-breaking eighth F1 championship.

Award-winning F1 journalist and former team manager Peter Windsor thinks they also missed out on one of the most poignant moments in the history of the sport.

“My point is that they were totally incorrect at Abu Dhabi, and they should have finished that race behind the Safety Car,” Windsor said on the Cameron F1 YouTube channel.

“And for all the people out there who say ‘oh Formula 1 races should always finish as a sprint, regardless, I would reiterate what I said several times.

“Any TV director/co-commentator who couldn’t have brought tears to everybody’s eyes as Lewis Hamilton was driving that last lap at Abu Dhabi behind the safety car, waving to the crowd, fireworks going off, under the night sky, having just broken Michael Schumacher’s record.

“Anybody that couldn’t have made that moment work, for posterity, in the history of Formula 1, shouldn’t be in the job in the first place.

“Not only do I think it was wrong to finish as a race in Abu Dhabi, I think Formula 1 missed a massive opportunity to create one of the most emotionally charged moments in the history of its sport,” Windsor concluded.
