Pierre Gasly says he felt sorry for Lewis Hamilton in Monaco

Pierre Gasly says he felt sorry for Lewis Hamilton, because the Briton was “stuck” behind him for “78 laps” at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton started the Monaco Grand Prix from P6 (he qualified in P7, but polesitter Charles Leclerc was unable to start the race), and ultimately he finished in P7.

His final position was a result of a poor strategy call, and the fact that it is almost impossible to overtake in Monaco. Unfortunately that meant Lewis was forced to drive behind Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri for most of the race.

Not only that, but an attempt to undercut Gasly proved to be a catastrophic decision by the team, as not only did Lewis fail to get in front of the young Frenchman, but he also got passed by both Sebastian Vettel and Sergio Perez.

Now, ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Gasly says he felt “sorry” for Lewis throughout the race.

“Lewis was in the mirror for…I felt sorry for him,” the French driver said.

“He was just stuck behind for 78 laps. But, you know, there was basically no opportunity. And I was surprised when I saw them boxing before us, it was not the right thing to do.

“But yeah, in the end, it’s better for us, we managed to score some more points and I think was a strong, really strong result for the team,” concluded Gasly.

Lewis and Pierre are thought to have a good friendly relationship in the paddock. At the start of the 2021 season, when AlphaTauri showed good pace, Hamilton was quick to point out how happy he was for his young colleague.
