Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher disagrees with Red Bull’s Helmut Marko, who sniped that perhaps Lewis Hamilton should have retired at the end of last season.
There’s no doubt that Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton are having an extremely tough time in 2022. The issues they have with their car has so far prevented them from being in the mix with the top teams.
However, while George Russell managed to get the best results out of the car, in certain races Lewis Hamilton has been struggling more than the young Briton.
Although many reasons for this have been outside of Lewis’ control, Ralf Schumacher thinks the Briton has to take a look at why there are performance differences.
“We also have to talk about Lewis Hamilton, of course,” Schumacher said in his column for Sky Germany.
“He has to ask himself why George Russell is so much faster than him. A 13th place is of course not Hamilton’s ambition.

“He has to admit to himself that Russell is the better driver right now. If this continues in the next few weeks, it will be exciting in the team. There could be changes in the ranking.”
However, Schumacher also reacted to Dr Helmut Marko’s comment that Lewis “maybe should have thought about stopping” at the end of last last season.
“I’m far from saying Hamilton has missed the boat on ending his career. Lewis is still one of the best drivers in the field, that is clear.
“However, the new concepts require drivers to change a bit. Hamilton is not so used to it. Russell, on the other hand, is a young driver.
“They obviously cope better with it,” the German concluded.
