Unofficial footage from Red Bull’s 2023 car shakedown reveals what appear to be similarities between the RB19 and the Mercedes W13.

Red Bull has performed a ‘secret’ shakedown of their 2023 car – the RB19, at Silverstone. Although there is no official footage released from the event, some fan footage provides a glimpse of the team’s new car.

Observers have immediately noted that parts of the RB19 appear to be inspired by Mercedes’ 2022 car – the W13.

Firstly it seems that Red Bull’s sidepods are slimmer than before, not as slim as Mercedes’, but definitely slimmer than they were in 2022.

It’s well known that in 2022 Mercedes introduced an innovative sidepods design that has since become known as the ‘zero sidepod’ concept.

Although it did not provide Mercedes with the performance they hoped for, it has since been confirmed by the team that it was not the reason for Mercedes’ 2022 issues, and it will most likely be retained in 2023.

Getting back to Red Bull’s 2023 car, the air intake on the RB19 seemingly resembles Mercedes’ 2022 design. Several other teams have also revealed a similar design.

It remains to be seen how big the similarities really are when official footage and images get released, but if Red Bull has really decided to adopt parts of Mercedes’ designs, it could mean that despite their issues, the German team was onto something back in 2022.

Below you can take a look at the video footage and some stills from Red Bull’s shakedown.
