2016 Formula 1 champion Nico Rosberg explains what led to his relationship with Lewis Hamilton falling apart while they were team-mates at Mercedes.

Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton have been friends since their time in the junior categories. However, when they became team-mates at Mercedes, and started fighting for the world title, things quickly deteriorated.

“It happened immediately when we were fighting for the World Championship, not before,” Rosberg told Eurosport.de.

“But that’s always the case – when you’re fighting for success in every race and for titles, it doesn’t work anymore.”

Asked if there was a specific moment that changed their relationship, he said:

“No, it was a build-up from one race to the next. If you want to decide the World Championship for yourself, you can’t play ‘peace, joy, pancake’.

“You have to test limits and go into grey areas to win. Especially when two drivers are at such a high level. And then it often gets tight.”

Interestingly, Rosberg and Hamilton are now fighting again in the electric off-road series Extreme E, where they are both team owners.

“I don’t regret anything,” the German continued.

“That was a sensational time and a mega fight. I’m very proud of that. In the meantime, we’ve returned to neutral, which is okay.

“And the funny thing is we are fighting each other again in Extreme E. We didn’t know about each other’s plans beforehand; we built up our racing teams in parallel.

“We also announced our teams within a couple of weeks, which was totally cool.

“It’s great that we’re reviving this duel,” Rosberg concluded.
