Former Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg says George Russell is yet to face the “ultimate challenge” against Lewis Hamilton when they start “fighting for podiums and wins from the get-go”.

Nico Rosberg knows first-hand what it’s like to face Lewis Hamilton in equal machinery. The German was engaged in a title fight with the Briton from 2014 until 2016, and managed to come out on top only in their final head-to-head season.

During his appearance on Sky Sports’ Any Driven Monday, Rosberg warned George Russell that, even though he finished 2022 ahead of Hamilton, he is yet to face the “ultimate challenge”.

“It would still be a different situation if then next year they start right at the front, fighting for podiums and wins from the get-go, being away from all the mess of the pack,” Nico said.

“That will still be a different situation where they are not completely lost and they don’t know what is going on with the set-up and have to try everything.

“So George has to prove it again next year and see if he can stay ahead of Lewis.

“That is the ultimate challenge,” the German concluded.
