Sky Sports reports that although Adrian Newey negotiated an early release from his Red Bull contract, he will be free to go to another team in 2025.

Red Bull announced today that their Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey will leave the team in early 2025.

Newey signed a contract extension with Red Bull in 2023, which was supposed to expire at the end of 2025 and reportedly included a one-year ‘non-compete clause’.

This means that he would not be able to go to another team until 2027 at the earliest, well into the era of new F1 regulations that will start in 2026.

Well, Sky Sports now reports that not only did Newey’s team negotiate an early release, but he will also not have to serve this period of ‘gardening leave’, and will be able to start work with a different team immediately after his Red Bull exit in early 2025.

“Sky Sports News understands Newey will not have to serve a period of gardening leave when he leaves next year, leaving him free to join another Formula 1 team to help design their 2026 car,” read the Sky Sports article.

“Several teams have been linked with moves for Newey with Ferrari – who have seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton joining them in 2025 – appearing favourites to sign him,” the article concluded.

The other teams being mentioned as Newey’s possible destination are Mercedes, Aston Martin and McLaren.
