Sky Sports reporter Ted Kravitz thinks Mercedes decided to “make a copy of the Red Bull via an additional project” over the winter break.

After a disappointing performance at the Bahrain Grand Prix, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff announced the team will abandon their original car concept and go in a different direction.

Ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, Wolff indicated that Mercedes has made big progress and is already evaluating it in the wind tunnel.

Sky Sports’ Ted Kravitz says he believes it is all moving too fast if Mercedes started working on these development only after the first race of the season, so he suspects the German team had a ‘secret’ plan all along.

“I was thinking about this the other day, maybe there was a secret project going on in Brackley over the winter,” Kravitz said.

“That they said: ‘We will continue with the original design, but make a copy of the Red Bull via an additional project and see where we end up’.

“They must already have this new design ready to go. You can’t send something to the wind tunnel now that you didn’t already work on a few months ago.

“These things just don’t move that fast,” the Briton concluded.
