Mercedes announced it will move its Formula E team to Mercedes Formula 1 team’s factory in Brackley for the 2021/2022 season.

In its first Formula E season, the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team was operating out of several different locations. Its race operations were based out of HWA AG’s headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany, its engine is designed at Mercedes AMG High-Performance Powertrains HQ in Brixworth and it also utilised Mercedes F1’s Brackley base.

However, now the team will have one central base of operation at the Brackley site. Mercede FE team principal Ian James says the multi-site set-up “made absolute sense to utilise [HWA] experience to get up and running in Formula E”, but now it “isn’t the most efficient set-up, if I’m honest.”

“That coupled with the other movements that are happening within Formula 1 at the moment, the cost cap, the restructuring that MGP is obviously going through meant that we have an opportunity over the next couple of years to strengthen synergies,” James continued.

“First and foremost it’s a Formula E decision but it’s done with the broader motorsport picture in mind.

“For season eight, we will locate the race trackside operations to the UK, in Brackley. So that’s really just to leverage those opportunities and those synergies that we’ve got with the wider Mercedes Benz motorsport family.”

Formula E teams have yet to confirm their intention to continue racing in the series and agree to the new 2022/2023 rules. Mercedes is expected to keep its FE operation going.

“We’ve got the homologation freeze for season eight [2021/22], so there’s not quite as much pressure on that. We’re yet to we get to see any key details on that perspective, for Gen3.

“There’s no final decision to be made on that at this stage, but the intention is to transition the vast majority of that [R&D] over to Brackley as well,” concluded James.
