Mercedes Motorsport Strategy Director James Vowles confirms the red star in honour of Niki Lauda was present on the special Abu Dhabi livery.
Ever since former Mercedes Non-Executive Chairman Niki Lauda passed away in 2019, Mercedes painted one of the stars on their livery red, in honour of the F1 legend and inspired by his signature red cap.
Since Mercedes used a special modified livery for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, that featured names of every Mercedes team member, some people had trouble finding the red ‘Lauda star’. James Vowles assures everyone that the star was there.
“We had some questions about the red star, the Niki Lauda star”, Vowles said to Motorsport-Total.com.

“It was still on the bodywork, just in a slightly different position. If you look at the left side of the bodywork and look at the car from the back, it’s now towards the driver’s helmet and the roll bar, but it’s still there.
Mercedes’ chief strategist admits he loved seeing his name on the championship winning car.
“It was the names of everyone involved in the project to win the championship that year.
“For me personally, it was a very proud moment to see my name on the car.”
