Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says “trying to win against the best guy” understandably “takes its toll” on Valtteri Bottas.

For a fourth year in a row Valtteri Bottas lost the Formula 1 title to his team-mate Lewis Hamilton, something that certainly doesn’t sit easy with any competitive driver. Additionally, the Finn’s performance in the last few races hasn’t been at the level that even he expects from himself, which prompted him to say he needs to “do better”.

However, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says the Finn still enjoys the team’s unconditional support.

“He’s a hard, resilient guy,” said the Austrian.

“Losing a title is not something that is easy to digest and it’s not expected to be easy to digest.

“But he has the unconditional support within the team, and I think from year to year it makes him more eager to win.

“Winning against the best guy could probably be the biggest satisfaction that a racing driver could have. But that it takes its toll, is to be expected.

“All of us, I think it’s not only me, he has this unconditional support from everybody in the team.

“I think he’s able to pick himself up, and he has a family that does, and then he has his teammates, all of us,” concluded Wolff.
