Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff gave his comments on Red Bull facing some karma and said “the importance” of Abu Dhabi “was greater” than Bahrain.
After both Red Bulls retired in the final stages of the Bahrain Grand Prix, some fans started saying on social media that it was karma for the controversial way in which Max Verstappen won the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the world title.
When asked about these comments, Toto Wolff shot them down, but also pointed out that what happened in Abu Dhabi was much more important than what happened in the first race of the season.
“The importance of the race in Abu Dhabi was greater than the importance of the opener to the 2022 season,” Wolff said.
“I don’t wish anybody bad [luck], and certainly [it was] a brutal race for them.”

After both Red Bulls retired, Mercedes managed to pick up P3 and P4, but Wolff says his team cannot be thinking about the 2022 championship just yet.
“It’s too early to really look at the championship as it stands. If we look at the pecking order today, it seems a very long shot to even think about being in contention for any of the championships.
“But, if I look at it as a race weekend, we probably scored the maximum points that we could have and we need to take it from there every single weekend.
“At the moment, it’s singular events because, realistically, when you’re third on the road, you can’t think about winning it,” the Austrian concluded.
