Toto Wolff gives his comments on Red Bull’s 2021 cost cap breach penalty and says “beyond the sporting and financial, it’s reputational damage”.

The FIA has announced Red Bull’s punishment for breaching the 2021 cost cap. The team has received a $7m fine, and its wind tunnel and CFD testing time will be reduced by 10%.

After the Mexican Grand Prix FP1, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was asked to give his opinion on the penalty.

“What’s most important is that there’s a robust governance,” the Austrian said.

“They didn’t bat an eyelid, they followed the process. They were rigorous. There were 13 places that were wrong. It was good that there was a penalty whether it was too low or too high.

“Beyond the sporting and financial, it’s reputational damage. In a world of transparency and good governance, that’s just not on anymore. You’re responsible for the brand.

“You need a little bit of leeway, you can’t take an aggressive approach. Any reduction in wind tunnel time will cost us performance.

“We are unfortunately benefiting by being third on the road due to the percentage. It’s quite a lot, it needs to be utilised.

“We’ve closed the 2021 numbers, let’s see what they do with the [20]22 submission.

“They would have every interest to have it right this time,” Wolff concluded.
