There have been talks that Daniel Ricciardo could become Mercedes’ reserve driver in 2023, but he ultimately signed with Red Bull. Toto Wolff gives his comments.

After McLaren announced they would not be retaining Daniel Ricciardo’s services in 2023, the Australian’s future in Formula 1 was in doubt.

Mercedes’ Toto Wolff has since expressed interest in bringing Daniel in as the team’s reserve driver, however, Daniel ultimately decided to return to Red Bull as the team’s reserve driver.

Toto Wolff reveals what went on between Ricciardo and Mercedes.

“Yeah, there were discussions,” the Austrian said.

“He is a super guy. There is nothing to say. It’s a shame that he is not in a cockpit because Daniel Ricciardo needs to be in a race car.

“But it didn’t happen. Nobody understands why the years in McLaren didn’t work out like all the previous years did. I remember Daniel from the junior series and he was always there.”

Wolff adds that while Mercedes still had to decide for themselves what they wanted to do, Ricciardo probably felt his old team was the best place for him.

“Basically, we just needed time to figure out what we wanted to do and Red Bull was his home for a long time.

“He knows the people and he hopefully has a good deal there,” Wolff concluded.
