Toto Wolff explains return of porpoising: “We have a ride issue”

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff gives his first comments on the heavy porpoising felt by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell in Monaco Grand Prix FP1.

After it seemed that the W13’s porpoising issue has been heavily reduced during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend, the bouncing returned with a vengeance at the Monaco Grand Prix Free Practice 1.

After the session Toto Wolff was asked if he knew what was causing the issue.

“I think we have a ride issue,” the Austrian told Sky Sports F1.

“That’s something that we had through the season. And this, on the bouncing, sometimes it’s a combination, but today it’s the stiffness.”

Despite this, Toto is certain the W13 is still a fast car.

“It looks like our car performs, because we were quick,” he said.

“Maybe not at the end where we had the Hard tyre on and we did the long runs but, overall, I think [it’s] a good car. But it’s just undriveable like this.”

Asked what the team intends to do now, Toto said:

“I think work on the set-up, trying to make it a little bit more enjoyable for them.”

Ultimately Wolff believes Mercedes is still on the right path.

“We’re coming closer in any case, learning more and more, so that’s positive,” he concluded.
