Toto Wolff gets cheeky: ‘We’ll blow everyone away at Silverstone’

Toto Wolff says the Austrian Grand Prix was “about damage limitation” and adds Mercedes will “go to Silverstone, blow everyone away and finish 1-2”.

Mercedes had another difficult race with Valtteri Bottas finishing in P2 and Lewis Hamilton in P4. However, Hamilton’s result was due to his car suffering damage that cost him a lot of downforce.

“First of all, I think the result looks worse than it really is because we were stuck behind McLaren,” Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff told Sky Sports F1 after the race.

“I think in terms of pace we maybe just didn’t have enough to win, but there was clearly a step forward.”

Wolff says the damage to Lewis’ car occurred when he was going over the sausage kerb on Turn 10.

“The damage occurred on the outside of Turn 10 over the kerb. I don’t think he drove over it too hard, it was just a piece that fell away, and we looked at the data and there was nothing different to normal there.

“So we will have to find out why that happened.”

Ultimately, the Red Bull Ring was never a track that suited Mercedes. In two weeks Formula 1 moves to Silverstone, a track that is thought to suit Mercedes’ car a lot more. Toto decided to get a little cheeky and sent out a warning to his rivals.

“Overall, today was really damage limitation. We’ll go to Silverstone, blow everyone away and finish 1-2 with a thirty second lead on the rest.”
