Toto Wolff says “when the drivers try to push the limits, there is a call to order”, and confirms he “made the team order call” for George Russell to move over for Lewis Hamilton.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was absent from Suzuka during the Japanese Grand Prix weekend, because he had to undergo a knee operation, but he was very much involved in team decisions.

OE24 asked Toto to give his reaction to watching Lewis Hamilton and George Russell’s close fight at the start of the race.

“It wasn’t that bad,” the Austrian said.

“We’re not fighting for a win or a title at the moment, but for the Golden Pineapple.

“When the drivers try to push the limits, there is a call to order. At the end I made the team order call.”

The team order Toto is talking about, is the one for George to move over for Lewis in the closing stages of the race.

Unfortunately, Toto is again absent from Qatar this weekend, so OE24 asked him to provide an update on his health.

“The operation couldn’t have gone better. Maybe I overdid it a bit with the rehab afterwards. In any case, my doctor said that long flights weren’t for me.

Asked if he will be watching the race in his home on TV, Toto said he will be fully involved with the team.

“No, I built a pit wall at home, I am connected to the team and fully involved,” the Austrian concluded.
