Toto Wolff joined the chorus of F1 personalities that came out with words of encouragement to George Russell, after he crashed his Williams under a Safety Car.

At the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix Russell lost his chance to finish in the points after making a costly mistake and crashing his Williams under a Safety Car. After the incident the Briton was visibly shaken waved off track marshals in frustration and desperation.

After the race a lot of Formula 1 drivers and personalities reached out to Russell to give words of encouragement and support. Lewis Hamilton was one of them and now Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff joins the chorus.

“That is all part of the development process,” the Austrian said.

“What makes Lewis and Valtteri [Bottas] so special, and before Nico [Rosberg], was the experience they gained.

“I think everybody needs to put a car in the wall behind the safety car. We’ve seen that from the most experienced ones, and making mistakes under pressure.

“And I think what George has done today, happened to the best ones.

“It feels awful for him right now, but it’s going to sink in, be like a scar, and he’s going to be a better driver in the future,” concluded Wolff.

Russell has been a part of Mercedes’ junior drivers’ programme since 2017 and is expected to one day get a seat with the team.
