Toto Wolff hints Lewis Hamilton could significantly extend his contract

Ahead of Lewis Hamilton‘s 300th F1 race, Toto Wolff said Mercedes’ partnership with the Briton could go “about five to 10 years”, so “we can go to 400” races.

Lewis Hamilton has been driving in Formula 1 since 2007, and the French Grand Prix will be his 300th race.

A huge chunk of those has been with the Mercedes works team, which he joined in 2013. Ahead of the French GP team boss Toto Wolff was asked if Lewis could compete in another 100 grands prix

“We talked a few weeks ago about how long our partnership can go and the figure discussed was about five to 10 years, so I think we can go to 400,” the Austrian said.

“Someone once said you have not just got to win the eighth – why not ten? Says he who is a second off the pace,” Wolff joked.

By the end of the 2022 season Lewis can surpass Jenson Button and Michael Schumacher in the number of race starts.

The all-time record is currently held by Kimi Raikkonen who has 349 starts under his belt, but he could be surpassed by Fernando Alonso by the end of 2022.
