Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff had good reasons to be happy after the Canadian Grand Prix Qualifying.
Despite struggling in practice, Lewis Hamilton managed to get P4, his best qualifying result in 2022 so far, while George Russell took a gamble with slick tyres, which didn’t pay off, but he still managed to get P8.
Wolff says he is all for taking risks considering the situation Mercedes finds itself in.
“We are not in the championship fight,” the Austrian said.
“But this is the moment where you can take risks and I am up for risks, I am up for ballsy calls.

“This is what he did and it could have been a hero moment. It wasn’t, but I think you’ve got to go for it when you are where we are.”
Wolff added he believes Hamilton could have had an even better result, had he been given a better strategy.
“I think if we had given Lewis a better strategy with a cooldown lap, we would have been further ahead and I think George would have been probably in an equal place [on intermediate tyres].”
And asked if he would like to see a chaotic wet race on Sunday, Wolff said:
“I think we are pretty good in the wet but unfortunately, the forecast – there is a big, yellow sun with hotter temperatures.”
