With Audi confirmed to become Sauber’s ‘strategic partner’ in 2026, Toto Wolff says he’d “never underestimate the Volkswagen Group, whether it’s Audi or Porsche”.

During the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, Audi announced it will enter Formula 1 in 2026 as an engine supplier, but later at the Mexican Grand Prix, the manufacturer confirmed it will also enter as a competitor, partnering with Sauber (currently Alfa Romeo).

As Audi has been a long standing rival of Mercedes, Toto Wolff gave his opinion on the announcement.

“To begin, I would never underestimate the Volkswagen Group, whether it’s Audi or Porsche, when they enter into such a project,” the Austrian said.

“They have the financial strength, the knowhow, the racing expertise to come up with a great project.

“And I think the marriage with Sauber is something that fits: it’s in Switzerland, it’s German-Switzerland, it operates under the same legislative environment.

“I have them absolutely on the radar, absolutely part of the teams that can be successful in 2026,” Wolff concluded.
