Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff warns Ferrari that Mercedes is always there to pick up “the ball” if they continue to drop it.

At the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, following a double DNF from Ferrari, Mercedes managed to get a respectable P3 and P4.

After the race, Toto Wolff said his team is not able to challenge Ferrari and Red Bull on the track, but they are there to pick up “the ball” if they drop it.

“When your car is not super-competitive with the front guys, [it’s about] maximising those points,” the Austrian said.

“It is important to consolidate and make sure that you are no worse than third. But equally, you see the situation at Ferrari. If they drop the ball often then we are there.”

As for George Russell again finishing in the top five (P3), Wolff said:

“He is very solid in bringing top positions in and he has been on the podium a few times and Lewis has been there.”

However, despite Mercedes’ good reliability so far, Wolff says his team needs to always be on their toes, because “the car could still stop at any time”.

“You always need to be on your toes with reliability because you need to score the points and not only be fast.

“I mean, I feel for the Ferrari guys because they have a super-powerful engine and a good car, but in the end, losing so many points makes you lose the championship.

“You need to be always wary, and we are because the car could still stop at any time,” Wolff concluded.
