Toto Wolff gives his thoughts on the Singapore Grand Prix Qualifying in which Lewis Hamilton almost got pole, while George Russell faced an issue with his car.

Mercedes’ Singapore Grand Prix Qualifying was a mixed bag. While Lewis Hamilton lost pole by the smallest of margins, George Russell got eliminated in Q2 due to an issue with his car.

After the session, team boss Toto Wolff explained what happened.

“It is a shame, we had a problem in [F]P1 that came back in Qualifying, that was torque following,” the Austrian said.

“Basically, you think the throttle is open and it pushes you into the corner, then the brakes were a problem so he [Russell] didn’t really have the equipment today to fight for a top position.

“It looked good against Sainz but all the others we don’t know. I guess it is where you are at the start. If you are ahead there are opportunities, if not it is going to be difficult.

“I think we were hoping that this weekend would go well…. So it seems that the direction we have developed towards is correct.

“Generally, it seems like we are heading in the right direction especially for next year,” Wolff concluded.

“I don’t know what the forecast says but dry would be good, and rain would be mayhem.

“Which would be exciting.”
