Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says Lewis Hamilton’s proposal to stop teams from starting development of next year’s car early “was more like a joke”.
Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton said the FIA should introduce a rule which would prevent teams from developing next year’s cars early in the season.
Since the ability to develop next year’s car early directly benefits the most successful teams, this rule would hit Red Bull the hardest.
This caused Max Verstappen to criticise Hamilton and say “we weren’t talking about that when [Lewis] was winning his championships”.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner also criticised the proposal and said Lewis is “obviously talking from personal experience”.
During one of Toto Wolff’s Austrian Grand Prix media appearances, the Mercedes team boss was asked to weigh in on the debate.
“Lewis always loves to pressure other teams,” Wolff said.
“It was more like a joke. I don’t think what he requests is possible,” he concluded.
