Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff on the difference between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen and between Red Bull and Mercedes.

In a recent interview with Auto Motor und Sport Toto Wolff was asked if 2021 can be considered “a success story” despite not winning the Drivers’ Championship.

“If you lose, it’s not a success story,” the Austrian said.

“The positive thing about that was our performance, how we managed to come back. After the disqualification in Brazil, I would have said that the drivers’ championship was lost.

“Nevertheless, we started with the same points in Abu Dhabi.”

And a big part of Mercedes’ success in the second half of the season is due to Lewis Hamilton’s amazing drives. Wolff went on to praise both Lewis and Max Verstappen.

“Max is lightning fast, but doesn’t have the experience yet. Lewis drives at the peak of his ability. The two raced in their own league.

“In some cases they had a lead of 40 to 45 seconds to the third-placed driver.”

Wolff was then asked to describe how Mercedes’ fight with Red Bull differed from their fights with Ferrari in previous years.

“With the Ferrari, the power came from the engine. We knew then that we could beat them if we managed to make up for the deficit on the straights.

“Ferrari also made more mistakes. With Red Bull it was an open exchange of blows, like two boxers alternating punches.”

And what distinguishes Red Bull from Mercedes?

“It’s hard for me to judge how Red Bull is set up internally. Our strength is our attitude and the values we always adhere to.

“Maybe we can solve problems faster and better because we always approach it with the approach of ‘What did we do wrong?’” Toto concluded.
