After Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes finally announced a deal for 2021, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff gave his thoughts on Lewis’ future.
Yesterday it was finally announced that Lewis Hamilton will return behind the wheel of a Mercedes to lead the charge for his (and Mercedes’) eight championship.
The contract extension came as little surprise to anybody, but what might have been a bit puzzling is the announcement that it was just a one-year deal. Wolff already explained the reasoning behind this, and in the same media session commented on Lewis Hamilton’s future.
“Lewis needs to decide what his future holds for him so I wouldn’t want to comment on where he stands [beyond 2021],” the Austrian said.

“On the other side, the team needs to decide long-term what we are going to do about our drivers.”
However Wolff has no doubts that the 36-year-old Briton is capable of going strong well beyond 2021.
“As long as Lewis enjoys racing he is very capable of going longer. He looks after himself, physically and mentally, so I don’t think in terms of ability that ends in 2021.
“But in the end, it is his decision,” concluded Mercedes’ team boss.
