Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says “it’s obvious that the drivers like to poke each other a bit, but then you can say that Lewis has raced three World Champions”.
In an interview ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton pointed out that he has had to compete against much stronger team-mates than Max Verstappen.
Considering how Lewis’ team-mates were world champions Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg, as well as drivers like Valtteri Bottas and George Russell, there’s no doubt that it’s a very strong lineup.
On the other hand, Verstappen had to share the team with the likes of Daniel Ricciardo, Sergio Perez, Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly, all great drivers, but definitely not as accomplished as Lewis’ aforementioned team-mates.
However, when asked to comment on Lewis’ statement, Verstappen said the Briton might be “a bit jealous of my current success“.

When Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was asked to give his view on the situation, he said this type of talk is normal for drivers.
“First of all, it’s obvious that the drivers like to poke each other a bit,” the Austrian said.
“But then you can say that Lewis has raced three World Champions. He raced Jenson, he raced Fernando and he raced Nico.
“But I don’t want to in any way diminish anybody’s performance because Max in the car is outstanding.
“So it’s just part of the fun,” Wolff concluded.
