Toto Wolff says Mercedes’ 2022 season was “more live testing than really racing”, and Lewis Hamilton “is there to win races and fight for wins, yet more than half of the season was a development game”.

Mercedes has been struggling with the W13 for most of 2022, with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell having to first help the team figure out how to improve the car, and only then worry about race performance.

“I would say the car we gave the two drivers was really a handful,” said team boss Toto Wolff.

“Very unpredictable, difficult to drive, and not competitive to race at the front. Therefore, it was more live testing than really racing.”

As a more experienced driver in the team, Lewis was tasked with more extreme testing work, but once the car started to improve, his performances got better and better.

“Once we got to a sensible point, he got back to his A-game,” Toto continued.

“Fundamentally, he is there to win races and fight for wins, yet more than half of the season was a development game,” the Austrian concluded.
