Toto Wolff says Mercedes interpreted Formula 1’s ‘new’ 2022 regulations “in a very conservative way”, but in 2024 he believes things are “going to be very different”.
After eight years of unprecedented success, Mercedes entered Formula 1’s ‘new’ regulations era in 2022 on the back foot.
The team’s ‘slump’ continued in 2023, but now team boss Toto Wolff says the team’s approach is going to change in 2024.
“I think the regulations, how they were laid out a few years ago, we interpreted them in a very conservative way,” the Austrian told The Telegraph.

“And we’ve seen other teams doing it differently. So watch this space. I think it’s going to be very different [in 2024].”
Wolff added he believes it is possible to get back into the title hunt, despite Red Bull’s current performance advantage.
“Always believe it’s possible. You cannot start the season with an attitude of: ‘This is not going to be possible.’
“We saw last year with McLaren what a huge step they made with a single upgrade,” he concluded.
