Toto Wolff gave his response to Red Bull team boss Christian Horner’s recent statement that George Russell’s Sakhir GP performance proves Max Verstappen is better than Lewis Hamilton.

Talking to a Dutch website RacingNews365.nl Christian Horner said that George Russell’s amazing performance at the Sakhir Grand Prix, where he replaced a COVID-19 positive Lewis Hamilton, proved that Lewis’ success is largely down to a superior car. He went on to say the fact that Max Verstappen’s team-mates were not able to match his pace in the same car proves the Dutch driver was better than Hamilton.

We already examined the baffling statement (that said more about the quality of Red Bull’s car, than about Lewis’ abilities), and now Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff gives his response.

”Horner can’t resist making a comment behind the scenes, but that’s part of his game,” Wolff told ORF.

“The future looks bright with the talents coming up and in the same car you can see who is the best. You can only compare a driver if they are in the same car.

Furthermore, the Austrian says Russell and Hamilton could also only be compared after they both race against each other in the same car.

”We haven’t seen Hamilton race against Russell, so you can’t judge that. We also haven’t seen Charles Leclerc in a top car.

“I have a high opinion of Sergio Perez and I am curious how he compares to Verstappen”, concluded Wolff.
