Toto Wolff says engine issues are not due to Andy Cowell’s departure

Mercedes’ long-time engine factory boss Andy Cowell has left the company in 2020. Toto Wolff says his departure is not the cause of current engine issues.

Mercedes has recently had to swap several of their engines. Lewis Hamilton is currently on his fourth unit, while Valtteri Bottas is on his sixth.

Not only that, but Bottas had to swap three engines in the last four races. This led to some speculation that the issues were caused by the 2020 departure of long-time Mercedes High Performance Powertrains boss Andy Cowell.

Cowell left the company in the middle of 2020 and was replaced by Hywel Thomas, who has worked on Mercedes’ engine side since 2004.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says the departure has nothing to do with current engine issues.

“The strength of the organisation is its depth,” the Austrian said.

“Andy is clearly an exceptional personality that contributed in his day, but so is Hywel, and everybody besides him. I have 100 percent confidence in the structure that we have today.

“Engine developments are not something that happens overnight. It has a long lead time when things go right or things go wrong.

“Andy was a massive part of our past success, but so was Hywel and everybody else. So I don’t think you can pinpoint it to one of the leaders having decided to leave the organization.

“They’re still really profound strengths within the organisation,” concluded Wolff.
