With all indications pointing to Mercedess drivers fighting for the championship between themselves, Toto Wolff says they will be free to race each other.

However Mercedes’ team boss admits there are “exceptions”.

“We don’t have rules about that,” explained Wolff.

“In recent years the drivers are often free to race, but there are exceptions. If there’s a situation where we have to ensure the team’s success, we may have to intervene, but it won’t happen quickly.

“I don’t want to make a decision that I’m going to regret. I don’t want to risk being in danger either. I don’t want to give other teams opportunities, like Red Bull Racing, because of a wrong decision.

“You could use different strategies. I’m not against it, but I don’t think we should do that here in Hungary.

“It’s something we’ve already discussed with the drivers in Austria and we concluded that it can make Formula 1 more exciting, so we can choose to go for it, but we have to think about it”, concluded the Austrian.
