Toto Wolff says he is in the middle of contract negotiations with Mercedes that will determine whether he will continue on as Team Principal beyond 2020.
Wolff’s current contract with Mercedes expires at the end of 2020 and there’s a lot of speculation around his future. One persistent rumour is focused on a possible move to Lawrence Stroll’s Aston Martin team (rebranded Racing Point), which intensified after it was made public that Wolff bought a stake in the British manufacturer.
However Wolff already downplayed this rumour and now further clarifies his move.
“It is a purely financial investment,” said Wolff.
“I believe in a long-term strategy that will hopefully prove to be correct. You could call it diversification.”
The Austrian went on to comment on his future with Mercedes.
“Without Niki [Lauda, Mercedes’ non-executive chairman, who passed away last year], I am now alone as a team partner. So it is about whether I extend my contract as team principal, and also how we will continue with this joint company.
“We are currently discussing that.”
