Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff acknowledges Lewis Hamilton is not at 100% after his battle with COVID-19, but he is “good enough to race”.
Lewis’ return to the track after his bout with COVID-19 was definitely at the last minute. Even the Briton acknowledged he is still feeling the effects of the “nasty virus”. Toto Wolff says the return to racing is Lewis’ “call”.
“Well, our race drivers always are obviously keen on returning to the racecar, even if he isn’t one hundred percent,” said the Austrian.
“I think that’s expected after 10 days of COVID-19. You’re not going to be on your A-game, but I think absolutely good enough to race.
“I think it’s absolutely his call to decide whether he’s fit enough or not. He’s a very experienced driver, he knows very well about his health, and he has been tested negative, and sometimes drivers are not perfectly well but they still race, and I think this is the situation.”

Although Hamilton is yet to be confirmed by Mercedes for 2021, he has already been listed on the FIA’s entry list for next season. Wolff was asked if that means the announcement of a contract extension is just a formality.
“Yeah, I was thinking who to put there, either Lewis or myself!” Wolff joked.
“But at the end, I opted for Lewis. Yeah, hopefully soon. I think we were delayed by him being unwell, and I think that’s not the right time to sit down.
“We were planning to sit down the other week, so it’s going to be a little bit later.
“But I don’t want to put a date to it, because I don’t want to be hounded about why it’s not signed yet,” concluded Mercedes’ team boss.
