Toto Wolff says Mercedes will throw the W14 “in the bin when it’s really fast”, because they have “encouraging signs from the tunnel of a balanced car” for 2024.
Mercedes started the 2023 season clearly behind its rivals, but a change in development direction has brought it closer, and even in contention for race wins.
However, despite this positive progress, team boss Toto Wolff reveals the team will not hesitate to throw the W14 “in the bin”, as they are having “encouraging signs” about their 2024 car.
“We will throw this one in the bin when it’s really fast and then embark on a new journey,” the Austrian said.
“I think we have encouraging signs from the tunnel of a balanced car that’s going to be more together, and we have answers to our questions.

“So, we are really looking at the results with an encouraging perspective.”
Toto also admitted that despite its progress, the W14 is still often leaving the team puzzled.
“This is still for us a little bit of a surprise box. Every learning that we have this year is going to be valuable next year.
“But obviously nobody is working on the current cars anymore,” Wolff concluded.
