Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says if the team can “do better in qualifying”, maybe they can “be at the front again”.

After Mercedes introduced a significant floor upgrade at the United States Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton managed to put in two brilliant performances in the US and in Mexico.

Since the upgrade is said to be an indication of Mercedes’ development direction for 2024, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says this gives the team confidence for next year.

“It gives confidence for 2024, yes,” the Austrian said.

“That’s the direction we’ve been going, now we just have to keep adding performance for next year.”

Since Mercedes seems to be very strong in race trim, Toto thinks they could be back in the fight if they improve their qualifying performance.

“I’m happy for many reasons. Lewis’ drive was incredible. We weren’t sure if the tyre could last until the end, but the last lap was the fastest lap. The car was good.

“If we can do better in qualifying, maybe we can be at the front again.”

That opportunity could perhaps come sooner than expected, maybe at the next race in Brazil, because that’s where last year George Russell managed to pull off Mercedes’ first and only win of the 2022 season.

“Only fools are optimists,” Toto said.

“I’d rather keep both feet on the ground, qualify well, and hopefully we challenge,” he concluded.
