Toto Wolff says it’s “a breath of fresh air” to have a podium without Red Bull, and adds Mercedes will “bring some stuff to Austin so you have some fun races ahead”.
At the Singapore Grand Prix, Red Bull was not the dominant team for the first time in 2023. Not only did the Austrian team not win the race, they didn’t even fight for the podium.
After the race, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said he thinks this was just a blip, and Red Bull will be strong for the rest of the year.
“I think they will be strong,” the Austrian said.
“They won many races this year, we must not forget just because we have this outlier here in Singapore which was a difficult track for us in the past in our dominant years.
“I have no doubt that they will be strong for the majority of conventional race tracks. But it’s a breath of fresh air that we have a different winner, we have a podium without them.
“You’ve got to take the small positives in a year of dominance.”

Toto also said he would like for Mercedes to have a race win in every season they competed in since he became team principal, but he admits they need to “stay humble about it”.
“I’d like to say that every year we raced, we had a win but you’ve got to stay humble about it.
“We have had a super strong Red Bull. We hope that we have more opportunities to race up front.”
He then added Mercedes has another upgrade in store for the United States Grand Prix.
“We’ll bring some stuff to Austin so you have some fun races ahead, and I certainly very much hope so,” Wolff concluded.
