Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says he believes Sebastian Vettel’s move to Aston Martin is just what he needed after “a negative spiral” at Ferrari.
Sebastian Vettel’s relationship with Ferrari was at an all-time low in 2020 when it was announced that the Italian team would not be extending his contract. However, Vettel soon found another home at Aston Martin (the rebranded Racing Point). Toto Wolff, a private shareholder of Aston Martin, believes it was just what the German needed.
“Sebastian needed one thing above all, and that was a change of scenery,” Wolff told RTL.
“When you get more and more into a negative spiral you have to bring a change. That’s what he did. He is now in a completely different environment.”

The Austrian believes Vettel’s ability wasn’t the problem during his time at Ferrari, but actually it was the team dynamics that caused friction and ultimately led to a drop in performance.
“I don’t think he didn’t deliver, it was the general conditions that got worse and worse or the teamwork that was disrupted.
“I expect a lot from Sebastian this year and I hope he gets off to a good start.
“The chapter of Aston Martin as a factory team is just starting and Sebastian Vettel is one of the strong pillars in this project,” concluded Wolff.
