After an exciting Singapore Grand Prix, Toto Wolff says it’s “super that Lewis is on the podium”, and adds it’s a shame that George Russell crashed, “because he worked hard for that”.
Mercedes performed very well at the Singapore Grand Prix, and were it not for George Russell’s unfortunate crash in the final lap of the race, the team would have gotten a P3 and P4.
In the end Lewis Hamilton managed to get P3 for the team. After the race, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff explained the team’s thinking and strategy.
“Super that Lewis is on the podium,” Wolff said.
“He had a brilliant race and and had pace at the end. Just a shame for George, because he worked hard for that.

“It could have been a good third and fourth, lots of points, but now we lost 22 against Ferrari.
“It was so difficult to win the race if we were just static. So we said let’s go for it and we just went for it and in the end it’s a podium for Lewis and that’s great.
“I don’t think we would have been able to win [by staying out during the VSC], that’s why we took the risk. We knew worst case it was third and fifth, best case the win.
“When we came out with several laps, it [the data] showed first and second,” the Austrian concluded.
